'My Air Conditioning smells - why is that'?

One of the most common complaints we receive from clients is that their a/c unit smells. Often it's described as an ammonia or a urine-like kind of smell but there are often descriptions and there are, of course, a number of reasons why smells occur in the first place.

Air conditioning units can sometimes emit unpleasant odours due to several reasons:

1. Mould and Mildew: Excess moisture can lead to mould growth in the unit's drain pan or evaporator coils, causing a musty smell.

2. Dirty Filters: Clogged filters can trap dirt and moisture, leading to bad odours as air passes through them.

3. Bacterial Growth: Stagnant water within the unit can promote bacterial growth, resulting in a smell similar to dirty socks.

4. Refrigerant Leaks: A chemical or vinegar-like smell may indicate a refrigerant leak, which requires immediate attention.

5. Overheating Components: Electrical issues or dust burning off after a long period of inactivity can cause a burning smell.

6. Dead Animals: Small animals can sometimes get trapped in the unit, leading to a foul smell.

Regular maintenance, such as cleaning filters and ensuring proper drainage, can help prevent these odours. If you notice persistent or strong smells, it's best to contact us straight away for inspection and cleaning.
